Group Goetz Architects completed a phased renovation of this organization's interior office space for the third through seventh floors, as well as the lobby interior. While the average percentage of closed office workspace is still at 60%, a considerable number of staff was provided with functional and effective open plan workstations, which foster collaborative work. Meeting space was removed from the majority of the closed offices and shared meeting space was provided at convenient locations throughout the floor plate. This allowed the size of the average office to be reduced to 100 square feet, increasing the capacity of the floors to meet growth projections. Additionally, the reduced space allowed AFL-CIO to provide rental office space to their affiliates. The common floor amenities and support space locations remained in a consistent location on each floor to establish a way-finding system. These spaces were also organized to provide more flexibility, accommodate change and reinforce the circulation patterns. Interior office spaces were designed with indirect lighting, which is more uniform and glare free and provides the occupants with a sense of height in the space.Additionally, GGA reorganized and redesigned the lobby interior to capitalize on the qualities of the building's foyer. A flexible conference area showcases the monumental mosaic and establishes the AFL-CIO's formidable presence in the streetscape. A new cafeteria was designed with a full functioning kitchen and seating area. A large boardroom and three other large conference rooms were designed to have state of the art technology and AV capabilities to be able to broadcast major events within these spaces.
