Monumental Architecture Lighting/ Saint Anne Cathedral - El Salvador

Best of 2020
The Cathedral of Santa Ana is a Roman Catholic Christian church; it was built between 1926 and 1959 but its foundations date back to 1868 before it was built and remodeled into its current structure. Located in the second city of greater importance of El Salvador, Central American country; the city of Santa Ana shines by its production of coffee of world-wide quality like its but appraised commercial value. Of colonial settlement, it is the most imposing religious building of this country, declared National Patrimony and Historical Monument by decree of law; of neogothic style highly adorned and ornamented it counts on an own wealth of the time. Being a building of high legislative rank and cultural value (the highest that can be given to a national building) intervene it for either, maintenance, repair / restoration or embellishment (as is our case) requires a special and delicate touch! The research was arduous and the extensive and debated procedure, questions from the most conservative architectural community to those who are more progressive have debated the lighting that we have presented with the sole objective of beautifying this magnificent building and giving it its legacy within local and international society. However, we share through this publication not only the design techniques but also some challenges that colleagues or entrepreneurs of this type of projects may have doubts about how to face: 1 - The lighting design is purely under the technique of "Wall Grazing" and we have studied the positions and sections of how the facade is composed, which has 3 main parts: A) The first section is from the base to the intermediate cornices that divide the pinnacles that crown the front buttresses. B) The second section is the main pediment flanked by its two tower´s bells and its highly decorated hexagonal pinnacles. C) The intermediate balconies, main rose window and gothic pointed arches of the 3 main entrances. Each of these sections has been illuminated with a linear luminaires ( smalls) at the foot of each section and although it may seem a little "heavy" the effect achieved is a dramatic bounce of the shaded surfaces between the fretwork of the vertical ornaments, topped by the cornices of each subsection as a visual guide and crowned with the towers and pinnacles. To give a differentiated touch and break the monotony of warm light (3000K) typical for this type of building, we have added strategically studied points to apply cold light fixtures (5000K) and make a composition that has its origin in the religious tradition of the Catholic Christian Church. "Santa Ana is the grandmother of Jesus Christ and mother of the Blessed Virgin Mary, it is said, by popular tradition that Christ is the Gold and Santa Ana the Silver, that is why Santa Ana is the patron saint of the miners as well". This is how we have managed to rescue a universal tradition and represent it with its own light! How to do the electrical installation without damaging the building? many will ask: the proposal was that the distribution and electrical charge be distributed in two equal parts, vertically (like passing a blade in half from the base to the tip of the cross on the pediment) because they are exactly the same. Electric boards separately one on each side; the main branches run on both sides and derive at strategic points, especially along the cornices of each subsection and the cable runs "hidden" through these; covered by a mixture of lime, sand and cement with a dye and patina equal to that of the building, the luminaires have been manufactured in White housing as have the fittings that support them in order to completely "mimic" the luminaires both by day and by night. We leave you with some renderings of the lighting proposal which is currently being executed on site. The photometries used are combined according to the type of element or set of elements that we wanted to illuminate, oblique and concentrated photometries, semi volumetric and very concentrated accentuate pinnacles, surfaces between crests and medium range power projectors illuminate the main domes.
