Mason on Mariposa

Inspired by the historic pathway of an undergrounded creek, the plan for this community features two complex urban buildings interwoven with organic open space. A broad greenway defines the site, creating a dynamic diagonal mid-block connection and vibrant public realm dotted with seating and social spaces. An additional passage links from the east, intersecting the greenway to form a plaza at the heart of the community.

The plan for the 3.4-acre site takes advantage of the Potrero Hill topography, burying the garage in the hillside to maximize open space and prioritize active edges. The community provides 299 urban homes sensitively woven into the site’s disparate surroundings.

At the northwest corner—the boundary of Showplace Square—the development is anchored by a mixed-use volume that makes a clear urban edge against Jackson Playground and the Anchor Steam Brewery and marks the main point of entry. The two buildings flank the lush central greenway: Homes link directly to this passage via private patios, and community spaces overlook the paseo. These buildings feature courtyards, extensive amenities, and roof decks with city views.

At the more industrial western edge, flexible spaces zoned for PDR (production, distribution, and repair) and street seating provide resources for the neighborhood.

Along the more residential Arkansas Street to the east, the building’s modulated bays, color shifts, and stoops are inspired by the facing homes. A neighborhood-scaled retail space at the southeast corner balances the plan and provides an amenity for residents at the top of the slope.
