VOA Associates Incorporated - Design Studio

VOA, an international planning, architecture, and interior design firm, expanded their office space to reflect their mission statement of Best Design, Best People, Sustainability, and Extraordinary Client Experiences. Program requirements included providing a minimum of 50 workstations, as well as expanded conference and informal teaming and collaboration areas, resource library, kitchen and coffee bar. The new space offers a variety of improved team grouping rooms and meeting spaces that offer flexible, interchangeable spaces promoting strong team communication. The newly-created space embodies the firm’s initiative to Create, Inspire and Connect with clients, consultants and other team members as well as the community at large. The ground floor location signifies the firm’s commitment to the values inherent in New Urbanism, which are based in part on livable and walkable urban places. This concept of visibility and transparency translates literally and figuratively, and the open nature of the design is symbolic of an aim to drive a higher quality of design excellence and energize the public through design. The office space is meant for the public to come inside and explore how design works, thus serving as workplace and community resource.

Sustainability

Sixty percent of the new office flooring is cork and the ceiling is bamboo, both rapidly renewable resources. The remaining flooring of natural fiber carpeting is recyclable through a vendor buyback program. Decorative wall surfaces are clad in forest certified wood products or natural fiber, paper-backed wallpaper. All painted surfaces are covered with low or no VOC (volatile organic compounds) paint. All cabinetry is covered with recycled laminate, with kitchen counters and backsplashes of recycled quarts or terrazzo. All appliances are Energy Star rated. The open plan format features new, Herman Miller “Envelop” workstations with integrated technology, custom personalization, and sliding tabletops that foster improved ergonomics and all computers were replaced with new Energy Star-compliant models. Lighting throughout is either energy efficient LED or fluorescent, and occupancy sensors turn lighting off when a space is unoccupied. Glass enclosed conference rooms are equipped for video conferencing, to reduce the need for and expense of travel.
