Care & Cleaning

The International Design Guild has assembled important aspects of caring for carpet to best maintain its original beauty for years to come. Care and cleaning considerations include: Spotting, Substances to Avoid, Traffic Patterns, Crushing and Vacuuming.SpottingFor the best solution, take advantage of Carpet Care Concierge, the premier spot removal program recommended by Guild showrooms.Substances to AvoidMany substances commonly found in the household can damage your carpet. The top four offenders are:Bleaches (both chlorine and “safe oxygen kinds) Insecticides Strong alkalis (such as drain cleaners and oven cleaners) Acne medications containing benzoyl peroxide The best defense is to prevent problems before they occur. Follow manufacturers' instructions and be very cautious when using these chemicals around your carpet, always avoiding contact. After using these substances, be sure you wash your hands before coming in contact with your carpet.Traffic PatternsOver time, normal foot traffic and soiling can change your carpet's appearance. Redistributing traffic patterns on your carpet can lengthen its life. Rearrange furniture periodically to give some areas of your carpet a “rest. Regular carpet care and maintenance are also essential. Depending on the extent of the traffic, we recommend professional carpet cleaning every 18 to 24 months.CrushingYour carpet will display “crushing where heavy objects have been placed. To raise the pile back to its original height, pass a hot steam iron over the indentations ‚¬â€œ but bring the iron no closer than six inches above the carpet to avoid burning. If a tuft becomes snagged or loosens, cut of the frays and let the surrounding yarn fill in the space.VacuumingRegular vacuuming is key to keeping your carpet beautiful. In high traffic areas, dirt and grit become embedded in the pile and cause matting. Vacuum these areas as often as possible. Less heavily used areas can be maintained with once-a-week vacuuming. Vacuum about three passes for light cleaning and up to seven passes where there's more soil. For best results, use a vacuum cleaner with a beater bar or rotating brush with plenty of suction. Make sure you've adjusted the attachment to the proper height for your carpet. For loop pile carpet, avoid attachments with teeth or ridges. Some loop piles, such as berbers, may require suction-only vacuums to prevent excessive fuzzing. Empty the vacuum bag when it is half full.
