Almost a lost trade, Appliqué is one of the oldest known art forms, dating backas far as 3,000 B.C. Inspired by the aesthetic of Old World Artisan Guilds,Wende Cragg’s creations are rich in textural details and reflect an appreciationfor timeless interpretation of historic design.Art Nouveau, Deco and Arts & Crafts—as well as traditional—motifs are allincorporated into Wende’s meticulously-executed wall panels, pillows and tablerunners in a color palette that hints of opulent jewel tones and the burnishedmetals of nature’s realm. This neglected medium has unlimited possibilities. Somewhat like marquetry orstained-glass inlay, the composition can be manipulated to achieve shading and depthby “angling†the silk, turning it at 45 degrees to create subtle variations of the samecolor. This and many other techniques are employed when crafting one-of-a-kindpieces that are sure to dazzle any audience.Wende is a self-taught textile artist who has exhibited nationally for more than 35years. Featured in numerous publications and recipient of dozens of awards, herpieces are installed in residences from Italy to Hawaii and were recently included inthe SF Decorator Showcase.Wende works closely with designers and clients to create highly personal artisticstatements in natural fibers. Commissions gladly accepted.
