Contemporary Food Agora @ The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology

The SiteLocated at the remote geographical area at Sai Kung, students and teaching staff at the University are prone to stay at campus for meals most of the time. In light of this, the new Canteen is extended to a total GFA 30,000 sq ft and 3.6 meters ceiling height, which strategically becomes a highlighted spot for dining, gatherings, relaxation and leisure activities. The new extension allows the Outlets to accommodate up to 1500+ diners and ensures the canteen can operate smoothly and effectively even during peak hours. The Design ConceptInspired by the dynamic circulation at the site, the Canteen is a concept of “Contemporary Agora”, where the area is perfect for students and teaching staff to enjoy refreshments, exchange ideas and relax after class.Combining both Western and Oriental cuisine and offering an extensive variety of food choices, the design of the Agora lives up to the food diversity and adopts a peculiar approach to visualize “Elements of Food & Utensils”, manifesting its exclusive shapes, contrast and colors. The Cheese ZoneThe entrance of the Agora is marked by “Elliptical Shapes” which form like pieces of cheese, scattered orderly at the zones. These elliptical shapes perform as lighting fittings, indirect lights and ceiling shapes which intensify the contrast of shapes, forms, and colours. The Chopstick ZoneThe Chopstick Zone is a very unique area to attract visitors and cater for group seatings. The “Chopstick Tubes" distinguishes itself from the ceiling and the distinctively quiet booth seating essentially allures teachers and students to enter further inside the Agora and avoid visitors clustering at the entrances. The Chinese Rice Bowl ZoneThe Chinese Rice Bowl Zone is situated further apart from the entrances, and the unique pattern of "Rice" scatters around the ceiling and floor in an orderly chaotic manner. This zone serves ideally as an Enclosed Dinner Area for private functions. The Food Outlet CanalThe manifestation of the Outlets is conceived as a “Canal” next to the Agora, whilst the Canal equally locates the 4 Outlets and Bakery in a meandering channel, but at the same time, leaves out sufficient space for dynamic circulation.
