SILVER GAME WITH HAMMER AND LIGHT
Patrizia Tonin
The Swiss design studio BIG-GAME is always good for a surprise. As the multifaceted design trio met the traditional Viennese silversmith company, it was not clear which kind of object would come out of this cooperation. BIG-GAME mainly designs objects for companies that have large-scale production. The collaboration with the Wiener Silber Manufactur was an opportunity to explore the hand crafting of precious materials. When visiting the workshop, BIG- GAME was particularly impressedby the hammer especially the hammered surface sometimes finer, sometimes more rustic. The primarily decorative aspect of table silver is now re-interpreted by BIG-GAME – the hammered surfaces do indeed have a tell-tale affinity to industrial lamp reflectors and light sources. A table lamp series is developed that equally exploits the surface aesthetics and the specific light effects achieved with martelé. « Upon visiting the Manufactur, we realized that each piece produced there is a small treasure, and we wanted to create a functional object that would celebrate the beauty of the craft but at the same time have a very contemporary expression, » says BIG-GAME.The HAMMER lamp combines up-to-date lighting technology and traditional craftsmanship. The foot of the lamp is a technical part that incorporates a compact led light source and holds a solid silver or gold-plated silver reflector that can be tilted in order to adjust the angle of the light. « The reflector is made from a hand-hammered sheet of solid silver – a technique called martelé – and it gives the light a very warm feeling. The lamp really put emphasis on the beauty of the material, the way it plays with the light and the quality of the craftsmanship, » explains BIG-GAME.« Silber as material for modern living design – this is truly an exciting addition to our collection. I was always fascinated by the play of contrasts and textures: a serial product meets a precious lampshade, finely shaped by precise hammer work. Industrial production versus traditional handicraft. The result is a cool table lamp creating wonderful lighting effects », emphasizes Dr. Barbara Kamler-Wild, Art Director of the Wiener Silber Manufactur.HAMMER Lamp will be produced in a limited edition of each 12 pieces in silver martelé and 12 pieces in gold-plated silver martelé.
