Painting CedarIf you’re not having Vixen Hill apply factory coatings there are a few things you need to know when doing it yourself. Never use water based primers with cedar unless the final coat will be a dark color. Water extracts tannin from the wood causing staining, especially with white and lighter colors. Apply oil (best) or acrylic-latex to minimize extractive bleeding. Some areas where end grain comes in contact with wet surfaces should also be sealed with urethane.
