On the 26th anniversary of Orion Trading and Design, we reflect back on our very first customer, the Hyatt Regency Scottsdale who outfitted their entire Grand Lobby with Orion’s ‘natural’ recycled mouth-blown glassware. The general manager, gathered his staff together, held our ‘natural’ clear recycled glass high in the air and asked, “After our guests return home to Chicago, will they remember what they drank… or this glass?” We didn’t know then, in 1987, we were setting the industry precedent in nationwide consciousness about the importance in hospitality of using recycled glassware. It was from this concept of the value of décor, design, and green consciousness, the importance of creating emotion to a “sense of place”, that we continue to design and provide the finest in recycled glassware. Each glass for Orion is created in Mexico by skilled artisans and craftsmen one piece at a time. It's a trade handed down through the centuries.It begins with recycled bottles...piles and piles of crushed glass. Then, the propane ovens melt the glass until it's just the right consistency.It's a beautiful dance as the workers pull an iron from the fire with a ball of glowing melted glass at the tip. It's then twisted and turned. Another artist will add the splash of color, shape it, and mold it. Then the glass is blown into just the right shape for your unique beverage experience. Our course has broadened throughout the years in linking creative people, designing, sourcing and presenting outstanding tabletop products beyond our original rustic roots in Mexico to include unique design from here in America, Europe, Thailand, and India.
