Naturally, the design concept for the National Park Service's (NPS) Headquarters and administrative offices focused on wedding sustainability with modern, efficient workplace design. The design complemented the organization's “green lease, which defined the sustainable criteria that the building owner had to meet in his lease obligation, and was the first of its kind utilized by GSA. By maximizing natural daylighting, incorporating individual energy controls, and using recycled and renewable materials, GGA greatly reduced operational issues related to energy management, maintenance and cleaning.A second goal, but no less important, was to provide an architectural identity for the NPS, which united a flexible and modern office environment with sustainable concepts and conveyed the organization's environmental mission. The final design solution showcases a mélange of photographs of the Park Service resources, materials and colors, reflecting the mission of the National Park Service.
