Climbing the fence frequently becomes the method of access for reading utility meters or retrieving errant objects. Maintenance activities using heavy lawn and garden equipment, lawnmowers, and small tractors can easily impact nearby fences. Bicycles, all-terrain vehicles, and golf carts are frequently operated, parked, or stored in close proximity to fences. Landscaping often involves trees and large shrubbery planted along a fence line; their growth can push against that line. Tree limbs or stands for elevated structures such as bird feeders, weathervanes, flagpoles, and television antennas or satellite dishes can be broken in storms or high winds. Gates are a natural swing for the neighborhood children. In regions susceptible to heavy winter snowstorms, there is always a threat from heavy drifting or from snow removal operations.
