Victorian Splendor Overlooking the Mississippi

Cass Gilbert designed a wonderful home in 1893 with a back porch overlooking the Mississippi River in St. Paul, Minnesota. Travel was important to the Victorians who loved to bring back accessories to furnish their homes. This three season porch and deck reflect the excitement of the river and travel. Our design inspiration is three fold; the architecture and location of the home, as well as the lifestyle of the Victorians.A new Fir floor, Fir being original to the home, and a compass inlay, were installed replacing very vinyl squares. We selected this particular compass because of wave pattern which is also carved above several fireplaces and other wood structures in the home. The inlay is a combination of American Cherry, Brazilian Cherry, Maple and Walnut. The original Moroccan light fixture was cleaned and relocated above the inlay, allowing the installation of two ceiling fans & recessed lights. The fans represent an updated version of those used in tents while the Victorian's went on safari!New windows, installed on the outside walls, replaced very old combination aluminum windows - glass doors were added which open out to the new river side deck. The main seating area furniture, perfect for enjoying an evening cocktail while watching the sun set, features louvered backs and is made of teak with natural linen look cushions - anchors our design. The chairs are complemented with woven ottomans in black cherry. Syrian rosewood nesting tables with Mother of Pearl inlay complement an antique console table. A thick pile, natural wool rug from Morocco offers a contrast in texture to this seating area. The runner is from the Baluchi Tribe of Afghanistan. This space is rich in wood and neutral tones accented by red and chocolate. On the other side of the porch is a quiet relaxation area with a
