Dart Woven Flooring

An early version of Chilewich's signature Basketweave textile provided the creative spark to develop Dart. In this sophisticated new addition to the Chilewich Contract collection, a single color flickers in and out of a solid woven ground, leaving textured traces of a syncopated grid. At once lively and subtle, Dart imparts energy and depth wherever it is applied. This new weave is available in plank and square tiles, wall-to-wall flooring, and floor mats. It debuts in five colorways: Midnight, Onyx, Plum, Storm, and Tobacco. Made in the USA with TerraStrand (extruded yarns composed of a fiberglass core encased in phthalate-free vinyl that contains 25% renewable vegetable content), Dart is strengthened by Microban to resist stain- and odor-causing microbial growth. With an integrated moisture barrier that prevents spill absorption and inhibits growth of mold and mildew, Chilewich's innovative BioFelt backing system for floor tiles, planks, and rolls adds a cushioned layer of protection to distinctive woven textiles. Dart flooring is appropriate for all areas where carpet is specified today and for most areas where hard surface flooring is specified.

Sustainability

Plasticizers have traditionally been made from petroleum-based compounds that are used to make PVC yarns soft. Chilewich is making a significant environmental development by replacing the petroleum-based plasticizers in our yarns with phthalate-free, renewable vegetable compounds. We call these innovative yarns and the fabrics made from them TerraStrand®. TerraStrand® is 100% phthalate-free and contains 25% renewable vegetable content. Every square yard of TerraStrand® saves .02 gallons of petroleum and .41 pounds of CO2 as compared to conventional woven vinyls.Chilewich fabrics are covered by the internationally recognized GreenGuard® program, which is certified by the GREENGUARD Environmental Institute. This certification is also recognized by the U.S. Green Building Council.

Sandy Chilewich created her New York City based design studio in 1996. RayBowlsâ„¢, the first effort of her new studio, were introduced in November of 1997, and met with instant success. RayBowlsâ„¢ have a simple and inventive mechanism for making fabric concave and have won Chilewich many patents and awards. In keeping with her passion for creating new uses for textiles, Chilewich has reinterpreted a woven vinyl textile for different applications...table mats, floor mats and handbags. The durability of the yarn, its tremendous design versatility and the fact that it is washable, continues to inspire Chilewich. Plynyl, a commercial grade floor surface was developed with her husband Joe Sultan, an architect. Plynyl was created through bonding woven vinyl onto a cushioned polyurethane creating a completely new category in flooring. Chilewich won the ICFF Award for Plynyl at the 2001 International Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York.Chilewich began her career as an artist. Recognizing that she loved manufacturing and business as well, she sought a more commercial outlet for her talents and co-founded HUE Legwear. HUE is credited with revolutionizing the legwear industry with their innovations in design and merchandising. Chilewich and her partner ran the company for 14 years before selling it in 1992.
